How can cells stop diffusion through protein channels?

Cells can stop diffusion through protein channels by gating the ion channels. Gating involves using molecules to determine the conformation of the protein channel. Certain ligands can bind a domain of the protein channel and change it to the closed conformation and and thus introduce a physical barrier to the passage of molecules or ions which prevents diffusion from occurring.
