Our education has always emphasised on academic results, but is that all we need to get success in our life? Emotions do affect how and what we learn. Being more aware of our emotions and reaction to it will help us manage the stress. Once we learn to understand our emotions we will be able to communicate better. It is more crucial today than ever before that students are academically prepared to compete for knowledge and technology-based jobs. For students who are not prepared, the economic and social costs can be extremely high. In recent years there has been increased attention to the role emotional and social competency has in academic success. In the busy schedule of attending classes, tutorials, coaching classes, assignments and exams most of the students not only fail to understand others' emotions but forget to take care of their own mental health and emotions, too. Emotional intelligence is said to cover five main areas: self-awareness, emotional control, self-motivation, empathy and relationship skills. It is very important for good communication with others, therefore a gateway to better learning, friendships, academic success and employment. Skills such as these developed in our formative years at school often provide the foundation for future habits later on in life.
A few tips to enhance your Emotional Intelligence:
· Self-awareness - Identify your emotions; ask yourself what you feel. Put a name to that emotion. Your emotions are valid and do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Take some time to know where the emotions came from. Also identifying what thought led to this emotion will help you understand the reason for the way we feel.
· Empathy - Start observing others' emotions, respond to others in a way that you would want someone to respond to you. Try to be emphatic, feel the person's emotions as your own. Address the situation and help them understand what they are feeling. Much like what you do with yourself.
· Communicating - It plays an important role in developing and maintaining good relationships. Developing a good quality relationship can lead to a positive effect. The ability to express personal concerns without anger or passivity is a key asset. Try to listen more often but also give time for your own thoughts.
Dealing with Exam Stress - Stress is not always bad. Stress is just emotional strain and our body's response to demanding circumstances. The stress felt during exams is a natural reaction for your mind to prepare. It turns into anxiety and distress when you add the pressure of expectations to it, leading to fear of failure. So treat stress differently. Breathe, think first before starting anything. Calm down and do not compare yourself to others. You have your own pace. Accept what needs to be done and do it with love. Get motivation from the things or people you love.
