Two theories that comes to mind as to why the dinner turned out to be unsuccessful is either restraint and uncertainty. Both the Canadians and the Bangladeshis displayed awkwardness and restraint in both conversing and learning.
One of the theories I mentioned-restraint might have been caused by the lack of confidence of both parties in talking about business matters and both are too afraid to touch something sensitive towards each other's culture or line of work. this might have been resolved through being open towards each other and accepting comments if there are any without a heavy heart.

First, nobody between both parties initiated the talking and discussing. But instead, both ended up with full confusion and restraints. In order to avoid this, both must have had the common sense to make the atmosphere light and then, try to talk friendly and openly but with restrictions. These methods might have saved the awkward dinner and both parties must have had a wonderful time discussing each other's ideas and concerns.
