Per the syllabus and previous comment, this is an analysis of "coming of age" based on one or more of the novels from the semester. You can choose any aspect or examples of coming of age to center in your paper, just be sure to provide a clear thesis statement and supportive information in the body paragraphs. In addition to the primary text(s) (the novels), you use scholarly sources to support the point you choose to argue / contend regarding coming of age experiences, novels / fiction, black girlhoods, etc. Most likely, these sources are the ones you identified in your Annotated Bibliography; however, you may choose to use other / alternative sources depending on the direction of your thesis and paper.

As a slight adjustment, papers should be a strong 6 pages, minimum, no more than 10, not including the Works Cited. Be sure to include 5-7 scholarly sources -- scholarship about the novel itself, the author's wrting style, coming-of-age literature, black girlhood, and so forth as needed. Papers should follow MLA style in citations and overall formatting. (Check the Purdue Owl website.)

Novels

  • A Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody
  • The Girl by Jamaicia Kincaid
  • The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara

I have provided a file of "The Girl" and "The Lesson" but I could not find a file of "A Coming of Age in Mississippi."
