America has a population of around 330 million people. Out of these, 70 million adults suffer from obesity. Already 99 million people are overweight and likely to be obese within some months. In addition, 2.8 million people die each year because of obesity (Brazier, 2018). The disease is nearly an epidemic and that is why I wish to discuss five obesity intervention strategies below.

Step-by-step explanation

America has a population of around 330 million people. Out of these, 70 million adults suffer from obesity. Already 99 million people are overweight and likely to be obese within some months. Roughly, 650 million people were obese across the world in 1974. Today, the number has risen to 1.9 billion, with men being the most affected. In addition, 2.8 million people die each year because of obesity (Brazier, 2018). The disease is nearly an epidemic and that is why I wish to discuss five obesity intervention strategies below.

Dietary Changes

Changing of diet can help prevent, slow, and even eliminate obesity. When people consume more fat and calories than they use, they gain weight and with time, they become overweight and obese (Brazier, 2018). One should reduce consumption of processed foods that have a lot of sugar and fat. It is advisable for people to replace such foods with fruits and vegetables, which have high fiber.

Physical Activity

The body burns calories depending on the vigorous activities a person is taking. To reduce obesity or avoid it, one should take part in activities that help the body burn more calories such as running, swimming, walking longer distances and avoiding elevator to use stairs (Brazier, 2018). An obese person should register for exercise at a nearby gym facility or have a gym at home if he can afford. Discipline and consistency of exercises will ensure one loses as much weight as position. It is worth noting that if a person does not change diet, physical activities may not help much.

Weight Loss Medications

According to the National Institute of Health, medication can lower and eliminate obesity. Drugs such as Xenical helps a person loses weight within days or weeks. However, many of such drugs have side effects such as fatty stool, headaches, and increased defecation.

Surgery

Surgery has been used for sometimes to treat obesity. A section of the digestive system is changed or completely removed to ensure the victim does not consume many calories (Etzioni, 2014). A reduced stomach makes a person feel satisfied after eating little food. This makes one eat less and thus accumulate less fat in the body. Gastric bypass makes food skip some sections of the digestive system and thus its nutrients not absorbed in the body.

Treatment through Hormones

Hormones dictate feelings and body functions. A person can be injected with hormones that make him feel satisfied even when he has not eaten (Etzioni, 2014). An obese person will take longer time between meals and thus accumulate fewer calories in the body. A person can also be injected with hormones that will facilitate burning of fats and body calories in large scale. This will reduce overweight and obesity.
