An interview with Mike Moyers interviewing Sherman Alexie

Subject:EnglishPrice:3.86 Bought11

An interview with Mike Moyers interviewing Sherman Alexie. Alexie discusses how being bi-polar affects him as a writer, how being an Indian immigrant is a positive thing, and how the concept of tribalism caused the 9/11 disaster. You're welcome to view the whole interview, but I am only requiring you to watch 12:15-15:06. After clicking "Play," simply scroll the play bar to the12 minute 15 second mark to hear Alexie read his poem entitled "The Facebook Sonnet" and then listen to his follow-up explanation of how communication via social media such as Twitter and Facebook is "one dimensional" and "really insulting to the complexity of being human."

(a) What main point do you think Alexie is making through "The Facebook Sonnet"? Use one example from the poem to support your claim.

(b) Do you agree with Alexie's assertion in the interview that communication via the Internet takes "the poetry of life" and reduces it to a "dry, scientific" outline? Explain.

  • The author is basically telling the readers how the use of social media in communication doesn't compensate with face to face communication that we could be doing with the people we care about and that is obvious even from the very beginning of the poem "Welcome to the endless high school Reunion. Welcome past friends. And lovers, however kind or cruel. Let's undervalue and unmend the present why can't we pretend every stage of life is the same?" in this line we can see how the author is being sarcastic it shows here that not everyone on our social media friends are people we really care about and so communication with them is something undervalue and unmend. which will not happen in the first place if it is face to face communication.

(b) Do you agree with Alexie's assertion in the interview that communication via the Internet takes "the poetry of life" and reduces it to a "dry, scientific" outline? Explain.

  • Yes. although social media helps us to communicate with people far away from us the way how we communicate most of the time doesn't have soul with it because communicating is not only about the words we use to interact it involves how we say things, the tone of our voices, our facial expressions, body language, touch, distance etc. thus communicating thru internet is like an icing without cake it taste sweet but you are missing more than what you should have get.
