Rituals are significant such that they develop kinship ties which are important for the survival of groups of people in the world that is riddled with dangers.

Rituals create, reinforce and consolidate the community identity through the shared experiences. For example, ceremonies bond people together and help them identify with each other through the shared experience. Additionally, rituals connect the individual to the community, and the community to the spiritual world.

The Pan African rituals consist of birth, adulthood, marriage, ancestorship and eldership (not in order).

The ritual of birth initiates the infant to the world, with an added naming ceremony. The ritual of adulthood initiates one into adulthood, which usually takes place at the beginning of puberty. The rite of marriage represents two families joining together by forming a new couple. The rite of eldership is an important distinction between an 'older' person and and 'elder.' The rite of ancestorship initiates the dead person into the spirit world.
