The four reasons include;

• Annexing the Republic of Hawaii's territorial interest. In addition, the McKinley administration used the war as a justification to annex Hawaii's independent state. President McKinley was more eager to obtain the islands and the American public. Annexation proponents claimed that Hawaii was important for the United States economy, would act as a military base to defend U.S. interests in Asia, and other nations intended to take over the islands if it were not accomplished by the United States. On the initiative of McKinley, Hawaii became an American territory on 12 August 1898 by a joint resolution of Congress.
• From 1895-1898 the armed war caught the Americans' interest in an area very close to the United States, owing to its economic and political turmoil. President McKinley explained how such a dispute had been going on on an island so near America for years and with which Americans had shared corporate and commercial ties. McKinley said that the lives and rights of American people were in perpetual jeopardy as their property was lost, when foreign warships confiscated merchant vessels vulnerable of capture.
• The long-established interest of the United States in ridding the western hemisphere of the European imperial forces and American public indignation over violent Spanish methods brought Cuban revolutionaries much support. The frequent abuse of human rights and horrible situations in the Cuban camps in front of the Declaration of Independence. The invasion was thus necessary for humanitarian reasons and to end the barbarism, famine, blood feuds and terrible problems.
• The U.S. Maine explosion. U.S. military action in Cuba became inevitable after a battleship that exploded and sunk in Havana on 15 January 1898, under unclear circumstances.
