Strong Journaling:
· Journal demonstrates thoughtful engagement with the text, strong reading comprehension and includes astute observations about the text. Focus is on learning: to test, theorize, experiment, flesh-out, develop deeper ideas about the text.
· Every sentence is focused on trying to figure out what things mean
· Does close reading of every quote
· Notes ways the author is using language to express deeper meaning (i.e., literary devices)
· Tries to figure out what those literary devices mean
· Frequently asks questions and makes multiple attempts to answer them
· Works to think about original and interesting possible meanings
· The writer clearly explains their ideas and the thinking behind their ideas.
· Analysis is developed and specific.
· While not perfectly polished, the writing is clear and easy to read.
· The journal meets all requirements (including any specific directions for each individual entry)
· Summarizes (explains what happened in the text)
· Quotes vaguely have a purpose
· States obvious relationships and ideas
· Does little or no work to try to understand deeper ideas (no questions or proposed answers)
· Does not consider the author’s use of language
· Says things for the sake of saying them and not to try to learn
