Healthy people 2030 list many objectives. These objectives have a wide variety ranging from minimizing sexually transmitted diseases to early prevention of cancer (Satterwhite et al., 2013). For these objectives there are many means implemented to help stop the spread or occurrence of diseases and infections. For cancer, early screening and detection is implemented to identify who is more at risk. The purpose is to identify early in the disease process and treat the patients to reduce the overall cancer death rate (Satterwhite et al., 2013). The descriptive type of epidemiologic study can be used in for this objective. Screening patients and organizing the data by date, person, and place the screening occurred can be used in an ongoing study to help prevent and identify cancer in its early stages (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). As mentioned previously, this aligns with the Healthy people goals of decreasing the death rate of cancer patients. For descriptive epidemiology, the primary goal would be to identify people who are at higher risk for developing disease (or outcome of interest) (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). Ecologic studies can be used while looking at this specific population. Factors that can play into this population included those that already display a above average risk like genetics, family history, smoking, and older age. An advantage of this study would be that they are inexpensive, expedient, and can be used to generate hypotheses (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). The disadvantages would be that it would be harder to link disease exposure to specific individuals and that the pattern found may not be the same pattern found in an individual (Schmidt & Brown, 2019).
