We as society do not refer adolescents who violate the law as criminals. We refer to them as delinquents. Why do we use completely different set of terms in the world of juvenile and place such an emphasis treatment and rehabilitation when managing these clients?

 

The society refers to the adolescents who commit crime as delinquents and not criminals and also, different sets of terms are used in the world of juveniles, because of the age which is a great factor that separates juvenile offenders from the adult offenders. Basically, age is the most important obvious criterion separating the juvenile court from the adult criminal court. It is also on the basis of the assumption that, juveniles and adults should be treated differently. Therefore, the juvenile offenders who commit criminal acts that would be defined as criminal for an adult, especially criminal acts such as, misdemeanors and felonies are regarded as delinquents.

The different handling of the accusations of the juvenile misbehavior has also been influenced by the idea that, they are young people who are still developing hence, its only right to recognize this fact and treat them differently from the adults.

Most of the treatment emphasized for juvenile offenders are the forms of treatment designed to reduce, prevent or treat delinquency or antisocial behavior problems similar to delinquency.
