PEERS RESPONSE:

I examined Bruegel’s, The Fall of the Rebel Angels (1562).

 

One element of design that Bruegel used was color. The angels are wearing light-colored robes in contrast to the dark attire, shadows, and shades of the creatures they are fighting.

 

A principle of this painting’s design is the use of emphasis and movement. With their bright colors, there is an emphasis on St. Michael and his allies. Their robes and St. Michaels cape are flowing as if in motion. The creatures appear to be tumbling downward, giving a sense of movement toward the darkness.

 

There is a historical contextual aspect to this artwork. Bruegel, a Dutch painter, painted this in Antwerp in 1562, not long after the Protestant Reformation. According to Sachant et al., (2016), Protestants did not adorn their churches with works of art (p. 131). However, it was still crucial for the church to maintain influence by dramatizing Biblical stories in art and making them available for people to have in their homes or public spaces. This painting, which outlines a passage from the Biblical book of Revelation, may have been commissioned with the intent to reproduce and distribute.

 

This artwork has symbolism and iconography. St. Michael and the other angels are all religious icons and symbolic of good and righteousness. The fallen angels who are being dominated are depicted as plant, animal, and human hybrids that, although they look fascinating, are malformed and repulsive creatures. They are the embodiment of evil. The archangel Michael and his allies appear to easily push the horde of demons downward into the dark abyss at the bottom of the painting. This painting shows the viewer that good is triumphant over evil, as the Bible has prescribed.
