Moral Permissibility of bullfighting

Bullfighting is a spectacle that is seen to be very controversial as it's supporters view it as fine art while some of its critics see it as a blood sport.To the supporters, the spectacle of the bullfight is not just a mere sport. This is because the event is not only culturally significant but also fine art in which the bullfighter is oriented in a certain style and elicits sentiment through the act of the fight. Moreover, in terms of animal welfare, the fighting bull lives four to six years whereas the meat cow lives one to two years before it meets its end. Those years are spent free-roaming from place to place. Additionally, the death of the bull in the ring is more humane than the death of animals in a slaughterhouse because they are given a chance to salvage themselves.

Moreover, some people consider bullfighting a cruel entertainment in which the bull suffers a drastic and tortuous death. Many animal rights activists often protest bullfighting in Spain and other countries, citing the needless endangerment of the bull and bullfighter as well as saying that the conditions of industrial slaughterhouses are not better than the conditions of the bullring during corridas. Some cities around the world where bullfighting was once popular, including Coslada (Spain), Mouans-Sartoux in France, and Teocelo in Mexico, have even declared themselves to be anti-bullfighting cities. Other places, including some towns in Catalonia in Spain, have ceased killing the bull in the fight, but continue bullfighting.

The bottom line of the debate about bullfighting is whether or not we have a right to inflict pain and kill animals. We do have that right because many animals need to kill others either in the jungle or free land to survive. We may have the right to kill animals but for what purpose, if it is proteins, cells are apt for valuable experiments, then again, maybe killing them for the benefit of humanity will be acceptable. But, if killing bulls only serves the purpose of entertainment, then its moral rationales are questionable.
