In order to for Filipinos to contribute to our political situation, and since social media has become a breeding ground for misinformation, it is simply practical to adopt utilitarian approaches, that is to say, approaches wherein people will evaluate candidates based on the projected net utility which will be generated if that said candidate wins the election.

Step-by-step explanation

I social media, there are now a lot of fake news and misinformation. Even mainstream media is clearly politically biased. Therefore, I believe a practical approach, in particular the approach of utilitarianism, will be our best shot at contributing to our political situations. First, it might be possible to evaluate each candidate's platform according to its utility. Do they have clear useful plans for the future of the Philippines? And will their plans effectively show usefulness once put into practice? This is difficult to calculate, and this is one of the weaknesses of act utilitarianism. It is difficult to calculate which specific actions and platforms will create a the highest amount of net usefulness for many people. 

We will, therefore, attempt to use another form of utilitarianism. That of rule utilitarianism. Since actions are difficult to keep track, perhaps rules are the better criteria for usefulness. Hence, it will be helpful to note the principles which is the driving force of people to elect their leaders. We have principles like the idea of unity, or the idea of democracy, or the idea of liberalism, or the idea a strong leader, just to name a few. Which among these principles will generate rules with the highest net effect of utility. It would then be important to grapple seriously about these values. Is a unified Filipino people more important than actual ideas and platforms? And does having a strongman as our leader override all other political considerations? Or, in principle, are candidates who have had a good track record in politics the more useful ones? These are difficult questions. But insofar as these principles are the ones that guide the people in their action, then perhaps, under rule utilitarianism people can now have a better field of vision in order to evaluate which principles and values they should allow to drive them to elect their next president.
