Dear Project Manager- 

Now that we have decided to go with a district energy system utilizing a central plant producing steam and chilled water, I would like to talk about electricity production. The work we do in our labs is highly sensitive and we cannot deal with electrical outages. I would like to explore the opportunity to produce our own power. I would like a connection to the utility provider, but I would also like the ability to produce all the power necessary for our operations onsite. What are our options?

We are extremely excited about the decision of building a district energy system, the decision will elevate the relevance of not only this project but the whole building complex throughout its entire life cycle. The commitment to a green campus is exemplary and it will serve as a role model for new developments not only in this area but across the country.

Relative to your question about generating your own power, this is a topic that requires more investigation. I will start by saying that the three major sources of energy in the United States are fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, petroleum), nuclear, and renewable energy. We are excited to think about the implementation of renewable energy and the impact it will have in the environment. We recommend looking into three options: 1) solar energy, 2) hydropower, and 3) wind energy. We would like to set-up a time with you and a team of experts to evaluate our options and make a decision that suits your needs. Definitely, a great idea and great leadership exhibited by your firm to go green.

I am glad you have decided to go this route! You continue to demonstrate your committeeman to green building practices and green energy practices. I think what you are looking for is a microgrid. The microgrid allows for generation of power independent of the central power grid, but still ties you into the central power grid. A microgrid is a perfect option for you guys because they were specifically designed for situations just like this. The microgrid incorporates software in order to pull power from different sources at different points in time. You are able to utilize a number of different energy sources including solar panels, fossil fuels, wind turbines, and batteries. These sources in combination with the central power grid allows you to create the most efficient mix of energy. The software uses algorithms to determine what the best mix is with regards to your energy goals like costs savings or energy efficiency. Another benefit of the microgrid is that the risk of losing power at any time is substantially diminished. The central power grid is very prone to losing power due to inclement weather or other outside forces. The microgrid provides so many alternatives power can be generated at any time in almost any circumstance. I think this is a great next step in the building process. We will need to get together as soon as possible to discuss how this looks costs wise and design wise. We have an alternative energy expert on our team that I would like to bring to the meeting so he can give you additional information. How does next Monday at 11:00 look?

In case electrical outages, laboratory staff and appropriate personnel that are well-prepared and trained in all steps of a power outage contingency plan will ensure that risks are mitigated, and important scientific assets are protected. All active experiments should be stopped and/or stabilized. Al chemicals should be properly stored and no longer used.

I would like to explain to the ability to produce all the energy and its options. The term "cogenerations" applies to onsite energy production in which both useable thermal output and electrical power are produced.

Cogeneration refers to the production of electricity as well as heat, which is usedfor processessuch as heating water.

Power systems with high penetration of solar the wind generation can experience rapid increases or decreases in generation output due to these renewable resources.

During day when sun shines, the power conditioner in solar PV plant converts DC to AC and supplies power to load. During favorable wind speed, wind turbine generator produces AC electrical power. It supplies power to load and excess energy after conversion to DC power by battery.

Two options to match generations to load if renewable generation ramps up.

1. Excess power generated is stored in battery and the requiered power is alone supplied according to load demand.

2. In case of excess generaion, any one unit may be switched off while other unit is alone operated which is enough to meet the load requirement generation and demands matched.

Two options when generation to load if renewable generation ramps down.

1. When the generation is not sufficient to meet the load demand, the power stored in the battery is used to meet the demand. 

2. When both PV and wind does not give sufficient generation, the hybrid system maybe connected to AC grid to simultaneously take and deliver power to load.
