Many artists dealt with WWI by focusing on the destruction of the war. But not all of them. The Dada movement was founded on the idea that WWI was caused by the emphasis of reason and logic over emotions and humanity, and so they responded by rejecting any sense of reason. The 1950s and 1960s saw the emergence of Abstract Expressionism, Color field painting, Conceptual artists of Art & Language, Pop art, Op art, Hard-edge painting, Minimal art, Lyrical Abstraction, Fluxes, Happening, Video art, Post minimalism, Photorealism and various other movements. World War II literature helped to make that war, later called the "good war," a defining moment in affirming America's democratic values and the nation's identity as a moral people. Later in the century the literature of the Vietnam War would take American war literature down a starkly different path.
