In the research simulation activity, I played the character of Megan Boyle who is a research assistant for Mr. Haddard. Megan works for Dr. Haddard who focuses on psychosocial outcomes for patient with various types of cancer. In order received a continuation grant, Megan needs to find more participants for the study and conduct more interviews, which will allow her to keep her job and stay afloat in debt. Megan is under pressure which can cause research misconduct due to a lack communication from Mr. Haddard. The nurse, Jan, found a new study participant that will be perfect to the research study for cancer but the patient's only available time to sign the informed consent form was for next day. Since Megan already had plans with her boyfriend, the first thing she did wrong was call Mr. Haddard to ask if its fine to obtain the informed consent over the phone. Mr. Haddard explains to Megan that it is crucial for each participant to know every detail of the study and their protections. Megan understood the error she made and went to the interview. During the interview, the patient's daughter was in a rush and Megan did the right thing of telling them that she is required to do a detailed consent process. If this situation occurred again, I would give the patient the option to reschedule. The resources I would use is asking any questions to experienced RAs, the project manager, or my PI. Each individual has advanced knowledge that I can learn from and utilize in the future. It is imperative that meetings between RAs and PIs be substantive, including a review of procedures specified in the approved protocol, and held on a regular basis so that any issues can be caught early and adjustments can be made. The nurse researcher needs to state who he/she is, the purpose of the research, why the study is being done, and what will be done with the information obtained (Noble-Adams, R, 1999). I learned that ethical principles in research include not falsifying any information during interviews. As part of responsible data management, honesty about any missed appointments or dropouts is the best way to maintain the validity of the study’s data.
