  1. The general policy of the U.S. before the attack on Pearl Harbor is generally isolationist or non interventionist. America after the war was weary of the effects that participating in another war would bring on them. American opposition to the war was so strong, during the presidential election of 1940, then incumbent president Wilson even promised not to bring America into the war. It is also worth noting that even though Wilson promised not to go into war, he is also taking steps on helping the Allied powers at that time. Despite technically in violation of several neutrality acts passed by the legislative, FDR frequently uses loopholes in order to contain Nazi expansionism.
  2. a) Operation Overlord is the allied invasion of the occupied Europe. After they previously invaded Italy, the allies then decided it is time to invade France so as to push back the Germans and stop the Nazis. The major problem of the planners was how to overcome the formidable Atlantic wall, and how to fool the Germans into believing the invasion is going to happen somewhere else. The solution for the allies involve Operation Fortitude (Deception operation by the Allies to fool the Germans into believing the real invasion is going to happen somewhere else) and developing various ways like Paratroopers past enemy lines, technological innovation, massive overwhelming force. b) Operation Market Garden is the operation the allies devised in which they try to shorten the war by liberating Netherlands, which will provide a shorter and more easy way into invading the German lands. The allies main concern at that time was securing the necessary bridges in order for the main force to attack the Germans. Operation Market Garden is considered one of the largest Airborne attack operations. It is their answer to their bridge problem. They will send paratroopers ahead of the armored invasion so as to seize the vital bridges need for the operation to succeed.
