While investigating a new electrochemical reaction, junior electrochemist obtained a
set of cyclic voltammograms (see graph). Please help your colleague to
analyze obtained results and determine the standard rate constant for the reaction. It is
known that this is a one-electron process with the transfer coefficient α = 0.5. Other
experimental conditions were the following: electrode surface area 0.02 cm 2 , temperature
298 K, bulk concentration of the species 1 mM (product of the reaction is initially
absent). Assume the diffusion coefficient of the species 1×10 -5 cm 2 /s.
(b) Explain the observed dependence of the peak potentials and currents on the scan rate.
