Although police brutality is nothing new to  African Americans and other ethnic minorities, the peaceful protests, the spillovers, and the hard conversations following the murder of George Floyd have shook the moral consciousness of the world. 

As a class, we read, researched, and discussed the problem and explored solutions that would bring about transformative changes in the justice system and put an end to police brutality or--as Lisa Guerrero, a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies says--"the serial killing of unarmed people of color."  

What, according to you, are the two main root causes of institutionalized police brutality towards African Americans ? Propose solutions that would address those two root causes and bring about a more equitable society, accountability, wellbeing of communities, intentional inclusion, empathy, or self awareness about who we are as individuals and as a nation.  

Develop a cohesive and focused persuasive essay based on the analysis you have arrived at through research and synthesis. Be sure to include a strong, clear thesis and solid supporting arguments. 

While developing your claims, use one or more of the organizational patterns--cause/effect, compare/contrast, analysis, and argumentation-persuasion. 

Devote one or more body paragraphs to develop the below ideas:

Solution #2: What will /can  you  do as an individual towards ensuring inclusion and empathy and dismantling systemic racism?

Criteria for success

Organize your response as a 1000 word academic essay with an introduction, body, and a conclusion.

Write a cohesive and persuasive essay that answers the prompt.

Include a clear, focused thesis, strong supporting arguments, compelling evidence, and detailed and convincing analyses in your essay. 

Include an original title that intrigues or orients the reader to your main argument (The title of the assignment, "argumentation-persuasion essay" etc. are not acceptable titles.) 

Demonstrate audience awareness. Visualize an audience that is undecided. Use ethos, pathos, and logos to win them over to your side and espouse your argument. 

Have sentence variety and sentence focus.

Observe the conventions of academic writing. Demonstrate your ability to use grammar, punctuation, and formatting suitable for college.

Cite your sources in text and in the works cited section using the MLA format.

 Introduction:

Should be at least 150 words.

Have an attention grabber opener that piques the interest of the reader.    

Provide relevant background information.

Have a clear, focused thesis that guides the reader through your essay.  The thesis should follow the Topic/Comment Model and unify the essay. State two causes and a solution in your thesis. 

 Body Paragraphs:

Support your main argument and claims with quotes, paraphrases, and other forms of evidence to support your claims and thesis.

Have topic sentences that introduce your paragraphs and signal transitions. 

Have claims that are opinions not facts.

Include at least 2 claims in the essay to support your thesis.

Support each claim with evidence.

Integrate the evidence into the essay. Provide context and background information when you include an expert opinion, quotation etc. Introduce the speaker / source  to establish ethos. 

Effectively introduce quotations and paraphrases using the “quote sandwich.”

Use  emotional language / pathos to persuade your reader. Think rhetorical strategies such as imagery, metaphors, personification, descriptions, anecdotes, rhetorical questions, alliteration etc.  

Thoroughly explain your claims and evidence with lengthy and detailed analyses that connect back to your thesis and claim.
