CIOs and Decision on Organization's Total Digitization

Introduction

Digitization is catching up with the current technology in firms, thus requiring leadership skills and minds to take on digitization. Total digitization or partial digitization of an organization depends on its budget and the activities they wish to digitize. Full or partial digitization is a decision that requires the involvement of the whole organization, which brings in the CIO to lead in this process. Since CIOs are faced with most IT decisions, and digitization is one of IT's responsibilities, digitization is a case that CIOs need to participate in decision making.

Today's CIOs Responsibility in Figuring out How To Handle Total Digitization

CIOs are mostly faced with making major decisions in an organization that requires adequate information to make the decisions. Being the chief of information, CIOs are supposed to figure out how to handle total digitization in their organization (Haffke, Kalgovas, & Benlian, 2016). Management processes are key in managing full digitization. The CIO needs to make strategic decisions that will cover the organization (provide the digitization the organization needs and in the right budget limit). Therefore, CIOs need to involve the whole team to bring all information they have, which is important in making the right decision.

To manage digitization, it is the responsibility of the CIO to figure out which strategy to use. This means that the CIO is tasked with developing the appropriate capabilities that will support the organization's total digitization. In line with this, the CIO also needs to create the right architecture that is most adaptive based on the organization's activities. Conversations are key in this because the CIO will identify why one architecture will work best than the other based on the information and feedback he gets. Generally, the CIO is tasked with talking to other C-level experts to decide which approach to go for because most of the strategies might be complex and fail in total digitization (Wunderlich & Beck, 2017).

Strength of CIO in Directing Digitization

Digitization depends on information, which is the responsibility of the CIO. Therefore, CIOs need a source of strength when making total digitization of the organization. Teamwork and communication are key in digitization. Digitization is faced with various responsibilities, and the CIO cannot cover all the duties alone. For instance, digitization requires the CIO to know the organization's budget and the cost of digitization of the organization. This requires the finance team to provide relevant information that can be used to make strategic decisions.

Another instance is in the IT department. They need to bring what they require for the organization's digitization to happen. The CIO also needs to know what his team is doing and how they are doing to fully digitize the organization (Gong, Janssen, & Weerakkody, 2019).

Conclusion

To wrap it up, an organization can choose the best strategy to use to total digitization. Caution should be taken because total digitization can be disadvantageous to an organization based on the strategy and approach to employ total digitization. Since this is the responsibility of the CIO, they should be cautious when gathering information to ensure that they get the right information in the right way that they may make strategic decisions that will lead to successful total digitization.

CIOs and Decision on Organization's Total Digitization
