The framers of the constitution kept in mind the development of the country and the changing society and how it could change in the future. The constitution need to be vague enough to be able to "mold" it to new ways of society that the future could bring. According to Cobb, 2018, The constitution is vague in order to set the basic outlines for a government with room for interpretation and change based on the needs of the people and its leaders. Pros of having a vague constitution is that it is fluid enough to be able to apply to the way of society today, as it did in the past (Middle Tennessee State University, 2020). Cons include the constitution being so vague that there are debates as to what a particular section is actually trying to say. The pro's and con's are both helpful and problematic, in that there has been dispute on certain articles of the constitution. An example of a vague portion of the Constitution is Article 3, which describes the judicial branch of our federal government. According to Cobb, 2018, "it very short and gives the Congress a lot of room to work with", meaning there is a lot of room for interpretation and the article has been subject to many different interpretations over time. Cobb, 2018, gives us the example of the Fourth Amendment and it's protection of the people from illegal search and seizure. The vague terminology "houses, papers, and effects" can be used to explain a person's items across many different generations.
