Final Presentation Instructions

Below are the instructions for your final presentation and a basic outline of what your presentation should include. I have also included how it will be graded, what % of the points for the project will be applied to each criterion for the project, etc.

The most valuable part of this assignment will be the critical thinking that you demonstrate in the project. I do not want a presentation that only reports the statistical findings of other authors. That is an important part of your project, of course, but what will be more important is your analysis -- for example, what changes would we need to make in society's political and/or economic systems to address whatever the negative impacts you address in your presentation would be.

Because one of the values of this class format is that you each share with the other two students your thoughts and ideas, I'd want you to share your analysis and findings at the final meeting for the session.

Let's set a due date of at least one week before the end of the session so I have a chance to review your project and give you feedback on it so you have a chance to make any revisions before the final meeting. I don't want this project to bomb your final grade because of some aspect of your final presentation that could have easily been revised.

Dear student, you want to do income inequality as your overall topic so I need you to select two factors that intersect with gender such as race, or sexual identity, or age OR issues that are related to gender that further impact income equality such as domestic violence. Then, for your presentation you would have the following sections. It should be approximately 10 slides long.

1. Introduction

2. Impact of gender on income inequality

3. Impact of gender on income inequality when first factor or issue (for example, race or domestic violence) is considered

4. Impact of gender on income inequality when 2nd factor, or issue (for example, sexual identity) is considered

5. What are at least two major changes in societal values/behaviors that are needed to mitigate the impact of the two factors or issues above on income inequality? Why would those changes be helpful?

6. What would be a specific U.S. public policy that could be adopted to address those two factors and their impact on income inequality? Why would that policy be useful in reducing income inequality?

7. What could you as an individual currently attending school in the U.S. do that would have an impact on reducing income inequality as a result of gender? Why would that action make a difference?

8. Conclusion

Instructions:

1. I would like you to submit a more detailed outline using the items above as the beginning framework so I can ensure that you are taking the paper in the direction I would like it to go. Please submit the outline by Sunday, November 21. You should already have an idea of the items that would go under each of the sections I’ve included in my basic outline.

2. For example, using the item above: Impact of gender on income inequality Here is how your outline might look:

I. Slide #1 and Slide #2: Impact of gender on income inequality

a. Media depiction of women

b. How that media depiction results in income inequality

c. Domestic violence against women

d. How domestic violence results in income inequality

NOTE: The topics you select for this section should be consistent with the other topics you select in the policy and other actions sections. For example, if you choose the impact of domestic violence on income inequality in this first section, then you would consider it compounded by the first compounding factor as the topic of your discussion in third section of the presentation. If that isn’t clear, please call me.

3. Each section (which might be one or two or more slides) should be clearly organized so that there is an introduction to the section and each topic addressed in the section is a distinct well-structured slide. So, you will need to think clearly about what points you want to make within each section.

4. Each assertion should be based on the literature used in this class AND similar materials you locate. At least 25% of the sources you cite should be ones NOT used in this class already. All opinions should be grounded in the literature to demonstrate that they are well-informed opinions. For example, if you write that one of the actions you individually could take to help decrease income inequality would be speaking up when you hear someone saying something that puts women down and, then argue that such an action would be helpful because it could change their views and counteract the impact of media bias then I would expect you would have a reference that stated that the changes in views of men as a group could be helpful in mitigating gender bias in the media.

5. Use APA formatted in-text parenthetical citations (on the slide at the bottom) and a list of references cited at the end of the presentation.

6. Use Grammarly.com to minimize spelling and grammar errors. (Grammarly.com has a free version that you can download onto your computer.)

7. Your verbal narration should include transitions and should be stated in the first person. Try to be as concise as possible but not at the expense of clarity.

8. Be sure that any direct quotes you use are introduced and not just inserted as a separate sentence into your slides. For example: John Doe (2021) emphasized the importance of clarity when he wrote, “blah, blah, blah” (p. 2). Make sure that you put any direct quotes into quotation marks.
