The Arecibo Observatory Telescope
The Arecibo telescope is 900 tons and is suspended 137 meters above a 305-meter wide dish. It has flexible antennas that can be adjusted to different directions, and this enables the observation of celestial bodies in various regions in the sky (National Science Foundation, 2017). The Arecibo telescope is a radar/radio-reliant observatory that uses radio waves or electromagnetic radiation in the atmosphere. The telescope dish is set in a naturally occurring sinkhole in Arecibo with the reflective dome above the dish. The dome is used to focus the radio and electromagnetic waves that are picked up by the dish (National Science Foundation, 2017). The telescope is an astronomical observatory. Since its inception in the 1960s, it was the largest single-unit radio telescope before it was replaced in 2016 by the Chinese FAST telescope. The telescope has contributed to significant discoveries, including the composition of the ionosphere, extrasolar planet, binary pulsar, and in the characterization of properties and obits of various asteroids (National Science Foundation, 2017).
The idea of the Arecibo observatory began with Professor William Gordon from the University of Cornell. Gordon was interested in the study of the ionosphere. Gordon got interested in radar backscatter studies in the ionosphere during the fifties through his normal continuous research (Clery, 2020). His idea led to the development of the Arecibo observatory telescope, which for over 50 years generated valuable data for scientists and in the astronomy field. The construction of the Arecibo observatory project was funded by the Pentagon’s Advanced Research Projects Agency, which wanted it to be used in detecting and intercepting Soviet missiles. Researchers believed that the Arecibo observatory could enable the location of missiles left in the ionosphere using the 305-meter wide dish as the observatory radar (Witze, 2020; National Science Foundation, 2017).
In recent years, the telescope has faced considerable challenges, and the National Science Foundation (NFS) has noted that the telescope would be decommissioned following the breakage of two cables that significantly support the structure (Clery, 2020; Witze, 2020). NSF planned for a controlled dismantling of the structure to reduce the possible risks the structure may cause to the engineers and the surrounding communities and to perverse important assets in the telescope (Clery, 2020).
