I recommend that you research the Equal Rights Amendment and the battle to have it ratified by the states--that was an issue that was very fraught at the time this poem was written, and I think Swensen's work can be usefully contextualized in that historical moment and cultural discourse. I'd recommend taking a look at the Chronicling America site with newspapers and checking ERA and Equal Rights Amendment 1970-1978; I'd also recommend searching those terms in the Historical Abstracts database; other good terms for the database might be "second wave feminism" and "feminine mystique"
