Running head: OVERVIEW OF FARC 1 ANALYSIS AND OVERVIEW OF FARC TERRORIST GROUP Daniel G. Cañón Columbia Southern University Typology of Terrorism Mr. Simmons September 14, 2021 OVERVIEW OF FARC 2 ANALYSIS AND OVERVIEW OF FARC TERRORIST GROUP In 1964, Manuel Marulanda and Jacobo Arenas, inspired by Marxist-Leninist ideologies, founded the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia), a guerrilla group. The group was mainly established to represent rural dwellers’ interests after a period of civil war in the country (Jaramillo, 2016),). The FARC, whose initial aim was to topple the government and take full control of the country, engaged in various activities to finance its operations. For instance, drug-trafficking, kidnapping, blackmailing, and unlawful gold mining. Furthermore, the FARC vehemently opposed United States’ financial monopolies and imperialism. Thus, the group was against America’s undertakings and influence in the country. The group received its first attack by the Colombian military forces in Marquetalia on 27 May 1964, where its 48 rebels retaliated. The group had never been confronted by the Colombian government before. As a result, the date is regarded as the group’s founding date, where the number of casualties remains unknown. The group’s last attack occurred on 22 June 2015 where it bombed the Tansandio oil pipeline, thereby contaminating several waterways with thousands of oil barrels. This contamination, in turn, cut off 150,000 people from accessing clean water. Interestingly, none was killed or wounded. However, according to Palma (2021), the FARC group signed a peace treaty with the Colombian government in 2016. Since then, it has formally demilitarized and demobilized. Currently, the group is a political party even though it retains the acronym “FARC” to mean “Revolutionary Alternative Common Force.” Nevertheless, some of the ex-freedom fighters of the group have resisted the move to demobilize and have engaged in criminal activities such as drug trading under the group’s original name.
