brown girl dreaming Reader Response Assignment

30 points (5 points for each response)

As you read brown girl dreaming, I am asking you to respond in three ways.

1.  Look for vocabulary words that you don't know. When you find an unknown word, you should write that word down and make note of the page number. Then, you should look that word up in the dictionary and write down the definition. You will do this twice, with two different words.

  • For example:
  1. p. 60 “bible times”: grits--coarsely ground hominy (grain) eaten as a breakfast dish or as a side dish with meats

2.  Second, you should react to something that you have read. Is there something that surprised you? If so, why? Did something make you angry? Why? Did something make you happy? Why? Those are some examples of how you could react to something that you have read. When an event in the memoir makes you want to react, you will write your reaction. You should tell how the event made you feel, and you should tell why you feel that way. You will do this twice, with two different reactions to two different situations.

  • For example:
  1. p. 72-74 “south carolina at war”: In this part, Jacqueline’s mother sneaks downtown to meet up with the protestors who are fighting for civil rights. Jacqueline’s grandmother warns her mother to be careful and not get arrested. Jacqueline’s grandfather says, “More than a hundred years, and we’re still fighting for the free life we’re supposed to be living.” That makes me frustrated and angry. People in the US should not have to fight for freedom; it should be inherent. It makes me sad that racism and inequality still exist to this day.

3.  Third, you should look for connections that you can make to what you are reading. You can connect in one of three ways: 1. text-to-text. For example, is there something in this story that makes you think of another story? Why? Explain how they connect. 2. text-to-self. For example, is there something in this story that makes you think of something that happened to you or someone you know? Does it remind you of something that you experienced? 3. text-to-world. For example, is there something in the story that makes you think of something that is going on in the world? You will explain how the two incidents are connected. You will do this twice, with two different connections about two different situations.

  • For example:
  1. p.135 “new york baby”: In this poem, Jacqueline talks about how her mother is having a new baby, so she will no longer be the baby of the family. Jacqueline seems sad about this; she enjoys being the youngest. I wonder if this is how my brother felt when I was born. My brother is seven years older than I am. He had my parents to himself for seven years, and then I “ruined” everything. I wonder if he felt mad and upset that I took over as the baby. I can understand now how he might have felt.
