Nokia's mission statement is "Connecting People". The Finnish phone maker. started communicating about the company's values right from the inception of that mission statement. They simply wanted to make phones fun to use, easy and accessible to everyone around the world. This was communicated really well both within the organisation as well as externally to share holders and customers.
The firm implemented Transformational & Ethical Leadership. Transformational Leadership helps identify key area of change and help the organisation bridge that gap through implementation. where it identified key areas of change within telecommunications and realised that the current market offerings were too expensive and people were still not as connected to to the world as they're supposed to be. Hence, started the mission to connect people. The leadership used internal communication as a powerful tool to integrate the values of the mission statement into their products.
Nokia's communication process conveyed that its Senior Leaders recognized how mobile technology and access to communication could transform the world and benefit those who fell out side the spectrum of accessibility.
As far as external communication to customers goes. the first motion image on that a user saw on a cellphone when they switched it on were two human hands holding each other along withe the mission statement "Connecting People". It soon became clear to the market, employees and consumers that Nokia, was more than a mere telecommunications company. These were it values. it was driven by its organisational culture and mission statement to make mobile technology affordable and accessible across the world.
As a consultant i would suggest Nokia's leadership to focus on user experience as much as accessibility in order to improve communication. This can be done by
Facilitate an experimental learning environment
Nokia needs to start facilitating a good environment where employees could experiment, and test their new ideas for products and services for the firm, they lost a lot of talent due to attrition when employees moved to rival firms like google and apple
Opportunities were lost because there was not a simple way for employees to test their new ideas in order to stay competent in today's markets.
