Challenges for Leaders: Managing People and Change

 Coursework assessment brief

The assessment of this module is a written essay.

Students are required to develop a 3 part assignment by analysing an organisation of their choice (preferably an organisation you have worked with in the past, or an organisation you can research enough information about) from the 3 areas of their choice out of the following 6 areas:

  • The perspective(s) of SHRM adopted in the organisation
  • The employee relation approach (unitarism vs pluralism)
  • The performance management system
  • The reward management system
  • One change management initiative
  • The global talent management system

You should present a critical review of each area, drawing upon concepts, theories and models covered in the teaching sessions and the prescribed reading. Following a brief description, you should consider questions such as the approach adopted in managing employee relations, the performance and change management initiatives, does it/did it meet its overall objective, how well is each aspect aligned with the organisation’s overall strategy and/or objectives? what has worked well, what aspects could be improved in the organization in each area.

Creditable resources you can use in your assignment:

  • Organisational data. This data can come externally from customers or clients (customer satisfaction, repeated business), or internally from employees (levels of job satisfaction, retention rates). There’s also the comparison between ‘hard’ evidence, such as turnover rate and productivity levels, and ‘soft’ elements, like perceptions of culture and attitudes towards leadership. Gaining access to organisational data can be very useful to determine the causes of problems, solutions and implementing solutions.
  • Expertise and judgement of practitioners, managers, consultants and business leaders. This professional knowledge differs from opinion as it’s accumulated over time through reflection on outcomes of similar actions taken in similar contexts. It reflects specialised knowledge acquired through repeated experience of specialised activities.
  • Stakeholders, both internal (employees, managers, board members) and external (suppliers, investors, shareholders), may be affected by an organisation’s decisions and their consequences. Their values reflect what they deem important, which in turn affects how they respond to the organisation’s decisions. Acquiring knowledge of their concerns provides a frame of reference for analysing evidence.
