Assignment 6 Gender Stratification and Gender Roles and Division of Labor Assignment 6 Gender Stratification and Gender Roles and Division of Labor (25 Points) Introductory Lecture: Gender stratification refers to the distribution of material and social rewards (elements that have positive value to people) based on sex (male and female). There are three important influences that affect gender stratification or the degree to which resources are allocated based on gender (man and woman): 1. the contribution men or women make to the material welfare of the group (occupation and income). (Reflect on Chapter 7.) 2. the control men or women have over key resources (agricultural and pasture lands, horticultural lands); and (Reflect on Chapter 7.) 3. the type of descent and postmarital residence pattern of a society (patrilineal or matrilineal descent; patrilocal, matrilocal, and avunculocal postmarital residency). (Reflect on Chapters 9 and 10.) So that, if women in some societies of a culture are in control of the material and social rewards, it is presumed that females are on top of the gender stratification --- females dominate. It goes to say as well, as also indicated by numerous studies, that male dominance is not “natural” and not “universal”. In modern and post-industrial societies women may move further to remove barriers to open doors for achievement and opportunity sake. In modern societies, women’s independent access to material and social resources has a positive effect on status leading to equality with men. However, anthropologists’ studies on culture-specific gendered division of labor impede the conclusion regarding key factors that will complete equality between the sexes. Questions: 1.
