Final Project Overview: Your final project will be a research project with two deliverables - an in-class presentation and a written report. Who is impacted by the environmental justice issue? 3. In class we have talked about cumulative burdens. Is the community facing multiple injustices at the same time? If so, what are they? If the historical context of any of these burdens is relevant, please explain what that historical context is (e.g. colonial relationship, historic redlining). 4. What research and data (if any) exists to explain the health, economic, or social impacts that the pollution is causing? What role did the impacted communities play in these studies, if any? 5. Choose one stakeholder that is trying to stop and / or raise awareness around the environmental justice issue? What strategies are they using? What solutions are they promoting? 6. What is (or are) your recommended solution(s) for how to solve the environmental justice issue you have selected? Deliverables You will submit your research findings in two deliverables (you must complete both for full credit): 1. A 3-5 page written report on your findings. Please answer the (6) questions above in both deliverables. The presentation should be a very high level overview, while the paper will allow you to provide more detailed responses. I will not grade you on your citation formatting Surname 1 Water scarcity in Egypt 1. My environmental justice issue is the scarcity of water in Egypt. Egypt has suffered water scarcity over the past few years. The country has suffered uneven water distribution, inappropriate water resources, and ineffective irrigation styles. The country is located in semi-arid areas implying that the country entirely depends on the river Nile as its main source of water. Since water is limited in the country, pollution is at a high rate affecting the environment. The topic is important because I learn the mistakes Egypt might have made that results in water scarcity to help other regions overcome similar environmental problems. 2. The people who are impacted by this environmental issue are citizens residing in Egypt. The population of the country has robustly increased in the past few decades. Egyptians have increased by more than forty per cent from the 1990s. Egypt’s population is projected to grow from its current 92 million to 11o million in three years to come. This insinuates that the country needs to find alternative ways to escalate the freshwater supply to accommodate the increasing number of citizens. 3. Cumulative burdens in Egypt. The reason Egypt is at this state is its geographical location. The country is located in North Africa, a place dominated by the Sahara desert. This place receives little rains of 80 mm per year, little rains that can comfortably sustain a country. The supply of water in deserts is always minimal, constraining activities like agriculture and afforestation, resulting in an appropriate environment and ecology. Another reason Egypt is dry is due to the high rate of pollution of the Surname 2 Nile River. Pollution of a river leads to exposure of marine creatures to toxic chemicals that kill them, and toxic water cannot be used for irrigation. 4. Impacts of water pollution in Egypt. The first effect of water pollution in Egypt is a water-scarce. When water is polluted, it becomes less useful in the nation. In Egypt, river Nile pollution is an issue that needs attention. The country generally depends on drinking, agricultural, and municipal use. When the water is polluted, the domestic use and other water use that require clean water becomes hard to achieve. The social impacts include reduced water usage; the health impact includes the transmission of waterborne diseases. The medical bills increase due to increased waterborne diseases affecting their economy. Egypt’s government is putting measures to produce water for the increasing population. Water pollution also has reduced Egypt’s economic score. The low scores are due to a low supply of water. The economy depends on the sales a country makes, for example, the business of groceries. This market depends on agricultural produce, which is constrained in Egypt due to a lack of water. 5. Stakeholders in Egypt. The first stakeholder to address the issue is the Egyptian government. The government in 2019 rationalized the use of water consumption in the entire country to preserve water resources that are depleting in the country. The government also thought the ministry of agriculture and land reclamation passed policies that prioritize water use for agricultural purposes. The Britain government also granted the Egyptian government a water allocation of about 50 million cubic meters. This was to boost the water supply in the country. The Egyptian government also has put strict laws that govern how environment polluters are dealt with and apprehended. This inflicts fear to the perpetrators; hence they cease engaging in these non-environmental schemes. Recommendation Water availability issues in Egypt have grown over the past few years. In 2020, Egypt consumed 20 per cent more water than it has been consuming in preceding years. The Nile River also is becoming lost to sustain the growing population efficiently. The Egyptians and their government have an obligation of finding ways that will curb this issue. Water cannot be regarded as a personal problem; it needs a collective responsibility from all the stakeholders. It also requires the neighbouring countries that use the same water resources like the Nile river to support Egypt because, when Nile water is pullulated before entering Egypt, the pollution affects Egypt regardless of their actions. Some of the ways I feel can mitigate this crisis include creating awareness. If people do not understand what is at stake when they pollute the environment, it’s hard to convince them to engage in environmental-friendly activities. On the contrary, if they learn, they will cease pollution spontaneously. According to Shindo, another way is prioritizing water generation projects. More water resources mean an increased supply of water, thus overcoming the issue. Another way is implementing harsh laws that curb those who pollute and misuse water. The infliction of fear to perpetrators scare other people from polluting the environment.
