 This case-study is based on some real-life investigations where digital forensics played an important role. While the names and entities of this exercise are fictional, the scenario is based on our experience with some actual cases. The goal of this case-study is to stimulate discussion and exchange of ideals in terms of the planning and execution of a digital forensic investigation. This exercise aims to provide a hands-on experience in both the planning and project management of a typical digital forensic investigation. Background Omega Corporation is an aerospace technology company. Its main line of business is the design and manufacturing of components for aircrafts and satellites. It has manufacturing plants in North America, Europe and Asia. You are the senior internal investigator of Omega Corp. in charge of all matters related to internal investigations. Omega in-house investigative team is comprised of many discipline of forensics, e.g. forensic accountants, digital forensic investigators, investigative researchers, etc. Aerospace technology is a highly competitive industry, with competitors from all over the world. Given that the aerospace technology is a niche industry with a limited talent pool, specialized workers of this field are relatively small in size and competing companies tend to compete for this limited talent pool, i.e. specialized staffs with industry experience. 

Situation

 While you are enjoying a coffee on a quiet Friday afternoon, your peace is interrupted by an unexpected phone call from Omega's Director of Human Resources ("HR"). Apparently the Vice President ("V.P.") Finance has just announced her departure from Omega Corp a few hours ago. Rumor has it that she is leaving for a competing corporation.  Director of HR informed you that the senior management (of Omega) is suspicious and worried that the VP Finance had transferred Omega's proprietary information without authorization. Management of Omega Corp. instructed you to lead a team to investigate whether any wrongdoing was committed by the departing V.P. Finance. As you are wondering how to approach this investigation, Director of HR calls again and informs you that three other senior employees from the Finance Department had just resigned. These individuals have worked closely with the just-departed V.P. Finance. Given the sudden nature of these departures, Omega management is even more concerned and eager to find out if there is a conspiracy involved.

 Tasks

 You are now assigned as the project lead for an investigative team with special focus on the above mentioned departed staff (i.e. V.P. Finance and the three senior employees). Your main goal is to perform an investigation over any potentially relevant Electronically Stored Information ("ESI") - to find out whether proprietary information was removed from Omega Corp. without approval and to seek evidence to support that there was a conspiracy in play involving the departure of the mentioned staff. Draft an investigative plan for this investigation. Your investigative plan should cover the Digital Evidence Workflow: Identify > Collect > Process > Review > Produce > Present.
