READ THIS AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW.

My chosen topic is to study the career outcomes of Nigerian immigrants to the United States in the field of nursing and medicine. This is important to me as a person of Nigerian ancestry who is studying nursing in America. The contributions of Nigerian citizens and immigrants in the field of medicine can be used to assist in merit-based immigration policy as well as for the benefit of the people of both Nigeria and the United States.

Execution: Letter addressed to Nigerian American Multicultural Council (NAMC) seeking funding for study of research proposed above. 8226 Furlong Lane, Houston, TX 77071

Working Title:

The Healers of Nigeria: Tracking Outcomes of Nigerian Immigrants Studying Medicine in the United States

Why-Explanation of issue-importance.

The contributions of Nigerian citizens and immigrants in the field of medicine can be used to assist in merit-based immigration policy as well as for the benefit of the people of both Nigeria and the United States.

Do these students remain in the United States? Do they return to Nigeria?

How far do they take their education? Bachelors. Masters, Doctoral

Personal interest. Courses, experiences, personal growth. I am of Nigerian heritage. I speak Igbo. I am a nursing student.

Location, geography, population

 Location- United States

Population studied- Nigerian immigrant students, both in-progress (currently in school) and completed studies (graduated and working in the medical field).

Community, efforts to contact, previous experience, distinctiveness of the people, geographic boundaries.

Community of Nigerian Immigrants.Previous experience=personal experience.

People are of a distinct ethnic and national group.

Geographic boundaries include the United States and Nigeria.Only includes Nigeria for long term studies and outcomes, should research extend beyond limited timeframe.

How?

Investigative methods, research procedures (observation, surveys, kinship charts, archives, photos, film) + why, potential problems, audiotaped interviews or no, interview selection and number, frequency of observation, field data written or typed.

There is a need to work with NAMC to make contact with Nigerian medical students. Another resource may be Nigerian Embassies throughout the United States. Another way to contact these students is to reach out to the various nursing programs throughout the United States.

Procedure: Opt-in to survey. Phone interviews. In-person interviews if possible. Phone and in-person interviews recorded.

Frequency/check in not required, but possible. Could potentially take place over the course of 10 years- this gives enough time to track the progress of students currently enrolled in medical/nursing programs and evaluate their outcomes.

10 year follow up questions:

Are you still studying medicine?

Are you still working in the medical field?

What job do you have in the medical field?

Have you earned any promotions in the medical field?

Do you still live in the United States?

Do you plan to stay in the United States?

If not to either of the above, have you or do you plan to return to Nigeria?

Field data is typed/recorded. Data is aggregated using computers.

When?

Schedule/timetable, estimation, travel time.

Immediately. Surveys/interviews conducted within/ over the next 6 months. If the project becomes a 10 year tracking project, then the time table shifts from 1 year (survey, responses, data aggregation) to 10 year data comparison.

Conclusions:

By studying the outcomes of Nigerian immigrants to the United States involved in the medical field, we can better understand the positive impact of Nigerian immigrants both on the United States, as well as Nigeria. If the United States were to move to a merit-based immigration system, then this data would be invaluable to policy-makers in determining which nations and people receive preference in immigration. We can also learn more about how Nigerian immigrants view education-is it a means of personal enrichment and achievement, or is it a more communitarian/national perspective that drives them.

After reading this above and answer these questions below:

Based on what you read state the field of anthropology that I'm  going to use to investigate this specific problem.  State the purpose and place of your investigation.  State the culture you will be studying.  Explain it and be more specific. For example, you can state:

I am going to use classical archaeology to study the on-land trade routes of ancient Greece.

I am going to use historical linguistics to study the divergence of the _________ language.

I am going to use bioarchaeology to study the skeletons at the bottom of Roop Kund lake for evidence of diet and origin.

I am going to use cultural anthropology to study the ritual practices of the sky burials in Tibet.

Please do not combine archaeology and cultural anthropology - archaeologists work with the dead and cultural anthropologists work with the living.

Remember, we do not have to have any answers - we are only coming up with questions.
