1:Environmental Policy of Ethiopia (EPE) was issued in 1997.It aims to maintain the health and quality of life of all ethiopians.It also amis at promoting sustainable social and economic development.It seeks to do this through sound management and use of resources and the environment as a whole,in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.At the Same time,it considers the rights and obligations of citizens ,organisations and government to safeguard the environment.The EPE is a document that defines policies of ten separate environmental sectors,covering soil and agriculture,forests and woodland,water energy,minerals, human settlement,climate change and much more.It also includes for ten cross- sectoral issues that need to be considered for effective implementation.

 

2:Assessment of community perceptions and attitude towards the environmental governance in chilimo _ gaji forest were studied in two dimensions _The attitudes towards the participatory forest management (PFM)system and the perception of forest and forest resources. Data for the study was generated through household survey comprising of 260 respondents selected through simple random technique. The study findings releved that generally the respondents held positive attitude towards the forest and pfm system. The results also depicted the Association between socio economic features of people living close to the forest and their use of forest resources and demonstrated the basis of attitudes towards those managing the forest. 60% of the respondents were found to agree with the idea of chilimo gaji forest conservation. However significant differences were found between the villages in terms of supportive attitudes towards the forest conservation system and towards the pfm system. Nearly half of the respondents held a positive attitude towards the conservation project. However those higly dependent on forest to generate income remained unsupportive. This study then suggestes that to change the perception and attitude of local people around the forest, environmental education through awareness programes should be encouraged and then addressing local development needs in order to ensure real participation in pfm system
