Specific Purpose: To create awareness about how much food goes into waste unconsciously.
Central Idea: Food waste management helps save tons of food that would otherwise go to waste
INTRODUCTION
I. (Attention) Do you know how much food goes into waste? 33 percent of all food produced worldwide never get into our stomachs. It goes into waste.
II. (Reveal Topic) The primary focus of this speech is to create awareness of how about food waste management. How people can avoid food wastage
III. (Relevancy) The topic is important because it helps save food for future use and also save on the money spend to buy extra food that does not necessarily get into our stomachs.
IV. (Credibility) Following my interest to understand how much food goes into waste, I addicted some time to research about the topic and come up with pretty mind-blowing facts on how much food goes into waste. The information presented in the speech is credible because it is backed up with credible research articles.
V. (Preview) The speech will address statistics on the amount of food that goes into waste, ways that food wastage can be controlled and benefits of food waste management.
Transition: I will start by giving a brief definition of what food waste is and how we can avoid food wastage.
BODY
I. 33 percent of food goes into waste without conscious of how much that would save us if we did not buy extra food (Amyot, 2019).
A. Food waste is a modern problem that affects us in different ways as society. The main reason behind food wastage is its ubiquity. Food restaurants are everywhere and people end up buying food even when they do not need it.
1. People will meet in a café to discuss something matters and end up ordering food when they not necessarily need to eat just because they do not want to sit there idle
2. The ubiquity of food makes people to forget its value.
Transition: Therefore, understanding different ways in which we waste food is an important step towards food management.
II. From an environmental perspective, 45 billion gallons of water end up being used to produce food that end up in trash (Amyot, 2019).
A. Some of the food we consumer such as fruits, vegetables and cereals require water to produce.
1. If these foods go into waste, it means that not only the food but also the water that produced the food goes into waste.
2. This water could be stored and used during droughts.
Transition: Therefore, food waste management would save us unnecessarily costs and save water that can be saved for future use.
III. In terms of economy, food waste costs us billions of dollars annually.
A. In Canada for example, food waste costs the economy 31 billion dollars a year (Amyot, 2019).
1. This is a significant amount of money that can be channeled in other projects such as healthcare, education, or even housing.
2. Also, the amount of food that goes to waste can be donated to other countries with food scarcity.
Transition: The fact that people allow such precious resources go into waste, whereby other people lack food and survive on a single meal per day is can be regarded as being insensitive.
CONCLUSION
I. People need to understand food waste costs the economy billions of dollars annually. The simple way people can manage food waste is to ensure they buy, store and cook food that only meets their needs.
II. Simply take time to think about your food consumption habits, and the measures you can take to manage and control food waste.
