A problem that is too large and complex to propose for your project or thesis Include a brief discussion to provide context but clearly (underline) indicate your problem statement Evaluation will be based on grammar/spelling and the following characteristics of research problems - Describes and opportunity to improve understanding - Can be stated in a few sentences (about three is a good rule of thumb) - Is more specific than a general description of an area of interest - Is not based on a specific solution

Problem statement example :

1. Problem statement No.1 ( What media to use for advertising )

• a) Ideally we would like to utilize the most effective media (only one ) for publicity of our bookstore in a given budget of $10,000 in year 2020.
• b) In Reality there are various media like Digital , TV , Newspaper , Flyers etc. We don't know which will work best , hence we will have to apportion budget for all the media , say $ 2000 each to 5 media and find out what works best.
• c) Consequences : We waste approximately 60% our budget on things which don't work, but we don't know what will work before trying it . Hence we have to try out most of the options .
• d) Proposal : We will conduct a pilot with a budget of $ 1000 with 5 media ( TV , Digital , Outdoors , Flyers, Newspaper) with $200 for each media and then go for full blown budget after the results of the experiment.

2. Problem statement No.2 ( How to avoid virus attacks on the computer )

• a) Ideally we would like to have an anti virus software which prevents all virus attacks on the network computer .
• b) In Reality there are various software available but they have not been very effective.
• c) Consequences : The virus attacks can damage the network and loss can be in millions of dollars .
• d) Proposal : We will sponsor a research study and evaluate all the software available to find out the best Anti Virus software available.

3. Problem statement No.3 ( How to eradicate poverty from planet earth )

• a) Ideally we would like to eradicate poverty from earth so that every adult person above 18 years earns $1 Million .
• b) In Reality lot of efforts have been made throughout ages , but none have worked so far - so the chances that this project will work is negligible.
• c) Consequences : If poverty is not solved , lot of people would die of malnutrition .
• d) Proposal : We will sponsor a research study and evaluate all the options available to alleviate to the extent possible so that the average annual income increases by 20% this year.
