Accessing Azure Labs

 

* If you have a Mac, go to the Apple Store and search for "Microsoft Remote Desktop".  Then, install the latest version.

* If you have a Chromebook, go to the Google Play Store and search for "Microsoft Remote Desktop".  Install the latest version.

* If you have a Windows computer, the Microsoft Remote Desktop is installed by default. 

You will receive a link to access Azure labs through your devry.edu email. Click this link (preferably in Chrome or Firefox).

NOTE: To view the email containing the link to Azure Labs, log in to the student portal (https://learn.devry.edu) and click the envelope icon at the top of the page near your name.

Make a note of your devry.edu email address, as you must use this address, and not your personal email, to login to Azure Labs.

The link will open a web browser that says Registering to the Lab. Login with your school (devry.edu) email address and the same password you use for the student portal.

Click the Button to start the lab you are registering to.

 

Starting the Virtual machine may take a few minutes.

Once it has started you will see a “running” message. Click the Connect button, which is the computer icon.

This will save an rdp file to your downloads folder. Open this file by double clicking.

If you get this message, click Connect

The password for the server is

Click OK.

Then this will open a remote desktop session.

If you get this error, click Yes

Once the desktop opens, use the start menu to see what software is installed. You can resize and move the Window around.

 

Important: Do not use the Windows Start > Shutdown command inside the virtual machine prior to disconnecting, as this may interfere with stopping the virtual machine.

 

 

 

 

When you are finished using the Remote Desktop environment, simply click the X at the top right of the Remote Desktop window to close the window. If the Remote Desktop window is in full screen mode, the X may appear at the right of a blue tab at the top of the screen:

If the window is not in full screen mode, the X will be at the top right corner as with any window:

Click OK to confirm that you want to disconnect from your remote session.

When you close the window to disconnect the Remote Desktop connection, the virtual machine will automatically stop after 10 minutes.

You can also manually stop the virtual machine by clicking the "Running/Stopped" button for the lab:

The virtual machine may take a few minutes to stop. You will see "Stopping..." while this is happening.

Check back after a few minutes to ensure the virtual machine has stopped successfully. You should see "Stopped" when the process has completed:

It is important to close the Remote Desktop connection when you are not using the virtual machine. You are assigned a quota which is the maximum amount of time you can use the virtual machine throughout the current session. This quota is set based on the amount of time you are expected to need to complete your assignments. If you remain connected to the virtual machine while you are not using it, you may use up your allotted quota. If you exceed your quota, you will be unable to start and connect to the virtual machine.

Each time you login to Azure Labs, you can check your current usage against your quota:

If your usage is on pace to exceed your quota (e.g. if you have used more than half your quota at the halfway point of the course), contact your professor to discuss ways to use Azure Labs more efficiently. If your usage is close to your quota, or if you exceed it, contact your professor immediately for assistance.

After you register, next time you would like to connect to the Azure lab environment, just navigate to http://labs.azure.com and login with the email address you used to register to open up your lab. You may need to start the virtual machine again if it has stopped.
