Give a detailed explanation on how student engagement via non-verbal communication skills can affect student's learning or grades.
Nonverbal communication, aside from words, has been described as behaviors and elements of speech. With the publication of the book "The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals" by Charles Darwin, scientific studies on non-verbal communication began in 1872. To Charles, humans continue to make facial expressions because over the evolutionary period they have gained communicative importance. Fast (1991) clarified that the main aspects of non-verbal communication are eye contact, head nodding and gestures. Zekia (2009) also emphasized the impact of eye contact on the success of students. The use of eye contact by teachers helped the students to be more focused, stop talking and listen to the instructor. It was in this sense that the researcher noticed that non-verbal communication tends to have an effect on the academic success of students in the teaching learning process. Nevertheless the direct influence of nonverbal communication in the teaching learning process remains troubling and uncertain as more experimental study is required to better explain this effect. Some suggestions have been suggested on the basis of this study and from the findings. Mehrabian (1972) conducted a study showing that 55% of contact is by nonverbal means (body language, facial expression, posture etc). 38% are related to the voice tone and only 7% are verbal (actual words). Training is a very important part of life and has an influence on all aspects of life. Education is the dissemination of knowledge from one individual to another. Without all parties talking, transfer of information can not be achieved. It can be either verbal or nonverbal for this interaction. Since nonverbal has a greater function than verbal, this demonstrates that during the teaching and learning process it is very important to research the impact of non-verbal communication because it is after this process that one can testify that he or she is learned.
