Initial Post Prompt:
There are two prompt options. Choose ONLY ONE prompt to respond to in your initial post. You may reply to posts based on either prompt.
Option #1 National Power Generation:
A key factor related to both environmental degradation in general and climate change, in particular, is the way society generates power. For this forum, each student should choose and research that country's power generation strategy. What percentage of the country's electricity comes from coal, oil, gas, nuclear power, and renewables? What is the state of the country's energy infrastructure? Are any new plants coming on line? Does this create concerns for business in this country? Does it create environmental concerns in this country and globally? Use data and evidence to support your research.
This is a first-come, first-served assignment. In other words, once someone has created a primary post for a particular country, other students may not use that country for their primary post.
Option #2 Dealing with Plastic Pollution
The closing case study in Chapter 10 is about plastic and the environmental impact of plastic waste. For this forum, each student should choose a country (not the United States) and research that country's policy to reduce plastic waste. Has the government put restrictions on plastic packaging? Are there economic incentives for companies to switch from plastic to more sustainable materials? How have consumers been integrated into the program?
What has been the results of the program – cite relevant data.
Countries should be selected from within specific continents on the following basis:
Student last names starting with:
A – G: Europe
H – N: Asia
O – S: Africa
T – Z: South America
### PLEASE CHOOSE EITHER France, Italy, Switzerland.
This is a first-come, first-served assignment. In other words, once someone has created a primary post for a particular country, other students may not use that country for their primary post.
Initial/Original Post
Please post what you view as the appropriate responses to the above prompts. Your initial post should be three good paragraphs (250-300) words. Please provide response with a clear, well-formulated thesis; sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling count. Support ALL posts with appropriate rationale and citations from readings; document sources using APA format.
Cost is an issue in Italy Plastic Ban
In pursuit of reducing plastic pollution, Italy enacted a nationwide plastic bag ban in the year 2011. The country has been applauded as the first country in Europe to successfully enact the plastic bag ban that has greatly led to the reduction of plastic pollution. This is with a consideration that Italian stores used 20 billion plastic bags annually (NACS, 2011). The government anticipated that the businesses will shift to other biodegradable packaging options. Like China and other countries that have adopted the plastic bag ban, the culture has been gradually adopted by the citizens. The Italians have since shown interest to support the plastic bag ban but the cost of the new biodegradable bags has been an issue.
The Italian government was clear that the new bags would not be given free. Nevertheless, in the year 2019, the Italian government proposed price cuts on plastic-free food and toiletries (Dalton, 2019). Also, the government had proposed that shoppers would receive discounts for products bought that do not need plastic bag packaging. Companies were promised incentives for products like drinks and shampoos that are offered in reusable containers. Still, such products are relatively cheaper than other products that need plastic packaging. However, the consumers feel discouraged because the new bags are not cost-free.
The lack of a cost-free alternative for consumers has led to some resistance (Dalberg Advisors, 2019). Biodegradable bags caused outrage in Italy just because a charge of 1 euro cents to 3 euro cents per eco-friendly bag had to appear on the sales bill (Povoledo, 2018). The cost has been the main reason for failure as it is perceived as an economic burden by consumers. The plastic law failures have also been reported to the EU (Rethink Plastic, 2021). They are a dire need for amendments to plastic ban policy in Italy.
